Types of steel sections used in building Construction|Rolled Steel Section| Structural Steel Products

 Structural Steel Products:

Ø  Structural Steel Products of interest to design can be divided into the following categories:
1) Flat Hot Rolled Products (plates, flat bars, sheets, strips)
2) Hot Rolled Products (Road shapes, hollow structural sections)
3) Bolts
4) Welding Electrodes
5) Cold Rolled Shapes

Rolled Steel section:

Ø  In a design process one of the main objects is the selection of appropriate cross section for the individual member of the structure, so it is more convenient to choose a standard cross section shape. So, the different categories of standard shape of Steel is turned by hot rolling and cold rolling.
Ø  Structural Steel can be rolled into various shapes and sizes. Steel sections are named according to their cross-sectional shape.
Ø  some of commonly used Rolled sections are:
1) Rolled steel beams or Rolled Steel joist (R.S.J) (I-Section)
2) Channel section (C- Section)
3) Angle Section
4) T-Section
5) Rolled Steel bars
6) Rolled Steel Tubular Section
7) Rolled Steel Plate (IS)
8) Rolled Steel Strips (ISST)
9) Rolled Steel Flats (ISFI)

1)    Rolled steel beams or Rolled Steel joist (I-Section):

1) Indian Standard Junior Beam (ISJB)
2) Indian Standard Light Beam (ISLB)
3) Indian Standard Medium Weight Beam (ISMB)
4) Indian Standard Heavy Weight Beam (ISHB)
5) Indian Standard Wide Flange Beam (ISWB)
6) Indian Standard Column Section (ISSC)
Ø  It is designated by its overall depth and weight.
Ø  For e.g. ISJB 150 @ 69.7 N/m.

Ø  ISJB, ISLB, ISMB, ISWB are used as beam section & ISHB is used as a column.

2)    Channel section (C- Section):

1) Indian Standard Junior Channel (ISJC)
2) Indian Standard Light Channel (ISLC)
3) Indian Standard Medium Weight Channel (ISMC)
4) Indian Standard Medium Weight Channel with Parallel Flange (ISMCP)
Ø  It is designated by its overall depth and weight.
Ø  For e.g. ISJC 100 @ 56.9 N/m.
Ø  They are used as a beams & columns. For Heavy columns built up channels are used.

3)    Angle Section:

1) Indian Standard Equal Angles (ISA)
2) Indian Standard Unequal Angles (ISA)
Ø  It is designated by its length & thickness of leg.
Ø  For e.g. Equal Angles ISA 90X90X6mm & Unequal Angles ISA 90X60X6mm.

Ø  They are used in Compression members, Tension members & component part of built up members.

4)    T-Section:

1) Indian Standard Junior Tee Bars (ISJT)
2) Indian Standard Light Tee Bars (ISLT)
3) Indian Standard Medium Weight Tee Bars (ISMT)
4) Indian Standard Normal Tee Bars (ISNT)
5) Indian Standard Wide Flange Tee Bars (ISHT)
5) Indian Standard Long Legged Tee Bars (ISST)
6) Indian Standard Deep Legged Tee Bars (ISDT)
Ø  It is designated by its overall depth and weight.
Ø  For e.g. ISJT 50 @ 39.2 N/m.
Ø  They are used in Compression members, Tension members & Frames of doors & Windows.

5)    Rolled Steel bars:

1) Square Bars (ISSQ)
2) Round Bars (ISRQ)
Ø  Square bar is designated by its sides whereas Round bar is designated by its diameter.
Ø  For e.g. ISSQ 12, ISRQ 12.

6)    Rolled Steel Tubular Section:

1) Light Weight Tubular Section
2) Medium Weight Tubular Section
3) Heavy Weight Tubular Section
Ø  It is designated by its outside diameter and self-weight.
Ø  For e.g. Circular Hollow Sections, Square Hollow Sections, Rectangular Hollow Sections.
Ø  They are used as a Compression member in roof truss.

7)     Rolled Steel Plates (IS):

Ø  It is designated by its length, width & thickness.
Ø  For e.g. ISPL 3000X900X10mm.

8)    Rolled Steel Strips (ISST) & Rolled Steel Flats (ISFI):

Ø  It is designated by its width & thickness.

Ø  For e.g. ISFT 300X20mm & ISFI 300X20mm.
